Finally figured out why my ZZ was looking dull—I was watering it on a schedule instead of waiting for the soil to actually dry out. In the arid climate here, that plant wants to go almost bone dry between waterings. Switched to checking every two weeks and it's perked up noticeably. The glossy leaves came back within a month. If you're in a dry area like me, resist the urge to baby it.
