I finally figured out why my ZZ plant looked so dull for the first year—I was watering it way too often, convinced I was being helpful. Turns out it genuinely wants to dry out between waterings, and now that I've backed off, the new fronds are coming in glossy and confident. If you've got one that feels a bit sad, check the soil before you water. Honestly, this plant rewards neglect more than attention, which feels like a personal attack on my caregiving instincts, but I'm here for it.
