I've had my snake plant for about six months now and I'm pretty sure I've been overwatering it

I've had my snake plant for about six months now and I'm pretty sure I've been overwatering it? The leaves feel a bit mushy at the base even though I thought I was being careful. I read somewhere that they like to dry out completely between waterings, but I'm still figuring out what that actually looks like. Has anyone else made this mistake? How do you know when the soil is truly dry enough?
