Notes on my ZZ Plant

I've had my ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) for about eight months now and it's finally putting out new leaflets after being pretty quiet when I first got it. I'm still figuring out the watering schedule—I keep second-guessing myself because the soil looks dry but I'm paranoid about root rot. Does anyone else struggle with knowing when it actually needs water, or am I just overthinking this? I'd love to share a photo of the new growth if I could upload one.
