So I've had my snake plant for about eight months now and I'm pretty sure I've been overwatering it

So I've had my snake plant for about eight months now and I'm pretty sure I've been overwatering it. The leaves feel a bit mushy at the base which I'm pretty sure means root rot, right? I read somewhere that they basically thrive on neglect but I keep worrying it's dying. Has anyone else accidentally killed one of these supposedly indestructible plants? I'm thinking about repotting it with fresh soil as a hail mary, but I'm nervous I'll make it worse!
