Houseplant Dormancy: Understanding Rest Periods
Learn why plants need rest and how to care for them during dormancy.

What is Dormancy?
Dormancy is a natural rest period when a plant's growth slows or halts, usually occurring in the colder months. This phase allows plants to conserve energy.
Signs of Dormancy
- Slow or no new growth
- Some leaf drop, which is normal
- Soil remains moist for longer periods
- Lack of flowering
Dormancy Care
- Reduce watering frequency to prevent overwatering
- Cease fertilisation during this period
- Maintain a slightly cooler temperature, around 15-18°C (60-65°F)
- Lower humidity for certain species
- Avoid repotting as it can disturb the plant
Plants That Need Dormancy
Species such as many bulbs, some cacti, cyclamen, and the Christmas cactus require a cool rest period to encourage blooming.
Breaking Dormancy
As spring approaches, gradually increase watering and light exposure to awaken your plants from dormancy.
Tip for Success
Monitor your plants closely during dormancy. While some leaf drop is normal, excessive loss may indicate other issues. Adjust care as needed to ensure plant health.
